Your First Flat or Rental: Embrace Your New Space

Amanda Sears

Embarking on the journey of living in your first flat or rental property is an exciting chapter filled with opportunities for growth, independence, and creating a space that reflects who you are. While it may not be your forever home, treating your flat or rental like your own sanctuary can bring immense joy and fulfillment.

Let's dive into how you can transform your flat into a beloved haven, with practical home care tips, clever storage solutions, vital cleaning areas to focus on, and the magical cleaning powers of white vinegar.

I've lived in all sorts of living environments in my 38 years after moving out of my family home at 17. From flats in Dunedin, Christchurch and Auckland to rental properties, campgrounds and motels all over New Zealand - even owning my own home for a while in Nelson - and what I've learned in every place is that no matter what it is or where it is, it is your home and it's important you love it and nurture it just like your body is the home for your soul.

It's a blessing to be able to call a tiny part of our grand planet Earth home and it's an even bigger blessing that someone would share their precious piece of paradise with us so we can have a roof over our heads, whether for a short while or a long time.

My intention for this article is to offer some practical guidance and inspiration on how to love your house like a home, however that looks.

Your flat or rental property is more than just a temporary dwelling; it's your personal piece of Earth. Nurturing and caring for it will not only keep it in great shape but also enrich your life. By investing time and love into your space, you'll create a warm and inviting environment that truly feels like home.

5 Practical Home Care Tips

  1. Personalize with Decor

Add a splash of your personality with temporary decor like removable wall decals, colorful rugs, and vibrant throw pillows. These small touches can make a big difference in creating a cozy, personal atmosphere. Have fun moving furniture around and trying out different layouts.

  2. Green Companions

Introduce houseplants to purify the air and add life to your space. They thrive on minimal care and provide a calming presence. (Make sure they dry out between watering so they don't grow mould).

  3. Lighting Matters

Use soft lighting with lamps and string lights to create a warm ambiance. Lighting can transform the mood of any room and make it feel more inviting. (We use smart bulbs with full RGB and white lighting options to personalise spaces).

  4. Keep Your Home Clean & Tidy

Set regular routines (daily, weekly, monthly) to clean, declutter and tidy your spaces. This will help keep on top of chores and also keep things running smoothly for each other. Keep personal belongings in your room or designated personal spaces if you flat, respecting the co-living areas. (This will make things much easier come inspection day too!)

  5. Friendly Agreements

If you're sharing the space, communicate openly with your flatmates about cleaning schedules, shared expenses, and house rules to maintain harmony and respect. (There is rich experience in living with other people and learning the dynamics of each person in such a close environment).

5 Useful Storage Ideas

  1. Vertical Solutions

Utilise stackable plastic containers, garage shelving and hanging organisers to free up floor space and keep essentials within reach.

  2. Multi-Functional Furniture

Invest in furniture with built-in storage, like ottomans or beds with drawers underneath, to maximize space efficiency. (Consider upcycling quality furniture from secondhand stores).

  3. Containers & Plastic Organisers

Use various sized plastic containers for drawers, fridge, pantry, bedroom, wardrobe, etc. to sort and organise things easily so everything has a home.

  4. Hanging Organisers

Use the backs of doors and rails in wardrobes for hanging organizers to store shoes, accessories, or toiletries.

  5. Creative Use of Corners

Place corner shelves or racks in unused nooks or on the kitchen bench to display books, plants, or decorative items.

5 Important Cleaning Areas to Focus On

  1. Kitchen

Every day wipe down countertops and 'reset' the kitchen space. Clean appliances, and the inside of your fridge to maintain a hygienic cooking environment. Organise your pantry so everything is accessible and easy to see (you can buy tiered shelving or containers to utilise deep shelves better).

  2. Bathroom

Focus on scrubbing the shower, toilet (and area around it too), and sink, and keep the bathroom well-ventilated by using the extractor fan and opening the window to prevent mold. (It's extra important to keep the place you use to clean yourself, clean).

  3. Bedroom

Change and wash bedding weekly and dust surfaces to ensure a restful and clean sleeping space. Check for clutter under the bed and remove it to allow the energy to flow easier. (Use a cotton mattress protector that you can wash to keep your mattress fresh).

  4. Living Room

Vacuum or sweep floors frequently, and dust electronics and furniture to keep the space fresh and inviting. (A telescopic pole with a microfibre duster works great for most surface areas and hard to reach places).

  5. Windows

Open doors and windows every morning and keep windows clean to let in natural light and keep your view clear and bright. (Taking things off window sills will help to reduce visual clutter that blocks the indoor/outdoor flow).

And to help make all that cleaning all the more easier and natural, here is one of the most useful household items for the kitchen AND home - white vinegar:

5 Home Cleaning Uses for White Vinegar

  1. Natural Disinfectant

Use white vinegar as a non-toxic cleaner for countertops and cutting boards to kill germs.

  2. Glass Cleaner

Mix vinegar with water in a spray bottle for a streak-free window and mirror cleaner.

  3. Odour Neutralizer

Place a small bowl of vinegar in smelly areas, like the fridge or bathroom, to absorb unpleasant odours.

  4. Lime and Grime Buster

Soak showerheads or faucets in vinegar to dissolve mineral buildup and restore shine.

  5. Fabric Softener

Add vinegar to your washing machine's rinse cycle to soften clothes and reduce static without chemicals.

Taking care of your flat or rental property is a rewarding process that fosters a sense of pride and belonging. By incorporating these tips and embracing the adventure, you'll transform your rental into a cherished home that nurtures your soul and offers a welcoming retreat after each day's journey. Here's to making your flat a vibrant and harmonious abode!
